Youth punished for intention to take part in unregistered organization

Three youth activists Jaugen Ivaniuk, Anastasia Shamarej and Nadzia Mantsevich were on June 21 detained near their houses by uniformed and plainclothes police agents and taken to the Minsk city prosecutor's office. All of them were officially reprimanded by the prosecutor, according to the Viasna human rights center.

"According to the information in possession of the Minsk region prosecutor's office, these youth have an intention to organize and take part in the unregistered organization "The Union of Belarusian Students", which was liquidated by a decision of the Supreme Court of Belarus," the prosecutor wrote.

Under Article 193.1 in the Penal Code of Belarus, activities on behalf of an unregistered organization are subjected to criminal prosecution.

Human rights defenders note that under the Law on Prosecutor's Office, prosecutors have the right to issue warnings to prevent actions on behalf of an unregistered organization.

Otherwise, the youth can be prosecuted under the Penal Code.

The warning was signed by the deputy prosecutor of Minsk, A.Stuk.
