Good weather, hard-working people contribute to record harvest in Belarus
Belarus has collected over 8,900,000 tons of grain or 1,500,000 more than in 2007. This is a record performance since Belarus gained independence in 1991. Belarus's former agriculture minister Vasil Lyavonau shares his views on this in an interview with the European Radio for Belarus.
"I can't know if these figures are real, but this year has been very conducive for farmers. The weather worked for a good harvest", says Lyavonau.
In his opinion, such years come extremely rarely. The harvest should be stored in an insurance fund. Meanwhile, reports suggest there is no enought space for this harvest.
Vasil Lyavonau is convinced that good weather alone would not be enough. Obviously, human factor also played a role. Lyavonau compares today's situation with early 1990s:
"Back then, people did not understand that they should sow and grow instead of sowing and picking. This understanding began to appear since early 1990s. Now this understanding sits deep in technologies, mentality of farmers. This class is steadily growing".
