Experts do not believe in privatization of big enterprises

The Belarusian Ministry of Economy has prepared a plan of privatization of the country’s biggest enterprises. Some negotiations with investors are said to be conducted.

A Russian edition “Vedomosti” informed about it concluding that Belarus might drop the existing economic model. A Belarusian economist Leanіd Zlotnіkau commented on the situation:

“It may happen. But it does not mean that they will be privatized. That’s a different matter. The privatization plan 2007 (just like the plan for 2006) is practically empty. There are very few establishments to be privatized.

Will it become a turning point? There is such a possibility because the Council really needs money. But will it change the model itself? It is incompatible with the policy and views of our authorities”.

An economist Yaraslau Ramanchuk thinks that everything depends on one person.

Ramanchuk: “As everybody knows, decisions about privatization are made by the President. That is why I would not think that privatization or any reforms are going to start in Belarus.

The business climate and attitude to investors have not changed in Belarus. Even if an investor decides to buy an enterprise it will be very difficult to gain any profit”.
