Spanish PM: Scotland not to be accepted to EU
Head of the Spanish government Mariano Rajoy has commented on accepting Scotland to the EU if it becomes independent.
He referred to the EU rules: if a part of an EU member state becomes independent, it will be left out of the union, BBC reports.
The independence referendum in Scotland is appointed for September 14, 2014. If citizens vote for independence from the United Kingdom, it will require the consent of all the 28 EU member states to accept Scotland back to the European Union.
The Spanish PM’s statement is a hidden warning to Catalonia, observers think. The local authorities also want to hold an independence referendum there.
