PACE urges Belarus to abolish death penalty
The corresponding resolution was adopted during the spring PACE session in Strasbourg on April 14.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe is urging Belarus, the USA and Japan to stop the death penalty practice, informs BelaPAN.
"The European experience demonstrates that the capital punishment is not required to prevent violence and that the political leaders who initiated its cancellation did not encounter any negative reaction of the society”, - is said in the document.
The PACE has condemned the death penalty that has been practiced in Belarus since 2008 and “has undermined the trust in Belarus’ desire to establish closer contacts with the European family protecting human rights and dignity”.
The Assembly has urged the Belarusian authorities to impose a moratorium on the capital punishment again and to make certain steps aimed at its legal abolition”.
