PACE rapporteur comments on Minsk metro blast trial
The sentence pronounced at Minsk metro blast trial may change the public opinion in Belarus in favour of the death penalty abolition.
PACE rapporteur on Belarus Andres Herkel has told it to journalists in Strasbourg, reports interfax.by.
In his opinion, “violations committed during the investigation and the trial” can contribute to it. Herkel has stressed that the abolition of the death penalty is one of the most important issues in the relations between Belarus and the Council of Europe. It is used in attempts to conduct a dialogue about the reinstatement of Belarus’ special invitee status. However, he thinks that the Belarusian administration has not made use of the chance yet.
