Constitution Day marked today
The first Constitution of the independent Republic of Belarus was adopted 18 years ago - in 1994.
The Constitution was adopted by the members of the Belarusian Supreme Council of XII convocation, headed by Mechyslau Hryb. The country's basic law bears his signature.
In 1996, the Constitution was amended due to Alyaksandr Lukashenka's initiative after the people's referendum. The Belarusian legislators did not recognize the referendum and this led to a considerable authority crisis. Although the state leader won, the international community did not recognize the amendments, initiated by him.
