Catholics start Easter Fast today
According to the tradition, the Fast starts on Ash Wednesday.
Powdering ashes over one's
head on Ash Wednesday is one of the most ancient traditions in Christianity,
states the website of the Roman
Catholic Church in Belarus. During the first centuries of Christianity this sign was used as a
visual start of repentance after the public confession before remission of
sins.
As for food limitations, at present, the Catholic Church requires strict fast
(one big meal a day) from its believers only twice a year - on Ash Wednesday
and on Great Friday. There are no special prescriptions for all the other days.
Each believer can choose for themselves.
Catholics celebrate Easter on March 31 this year.
