70th anniversary of Khatyn tragedy marked today
On March 22, 1943 the executors burned down the Belarusian village with its residents. 149 people died - women, children, elderly people.
"We will never forget the names of those who sacrificed their lives for the sake of our Homeland. Today, on the day of sadness and grief, we swear to defend our independence, to keep stability, well-being and peace at the Belarusian land", - Belarusian leader Alyaksandr Lukashenka has said on the occasion of the Khatyn tragedy anniversary.
Several days ago, there appeared an online database of the Belarusian villages, burnt down during the last war. The project has been carried out by the National Archive of Belarus together with the Belarusian Peace Foundation and the Russian fund "Historical Memory".
