The recently discovered asteroid 2024 YR4 has a small chance of colliding with Earth in 2032. Scientists estimate the probability of impact at just over 1% (previously, experts suggested 6%). However, they emphasize that the asteroid "deserves attention".

The asteroid was first detected by a telescope in Chile in late December 2024. According to preliminary estimates, its diameter ranges between 40 and 100 meters—comparable to the size of the Tunguska meteor.

Scientists are closely monitoring 2024 YR4, which is currently moving away from Earth, to better determine its size and trajectory. The asteroid is expected to pass Earth again in 2028, and further research may reduce the risk to zero.

The European Space Agency notes that Earth encounters asteroids of this size every few thousand years, and such impacts can have significant consequences.

A potential collision with 2024 YR4 is projected for December 22, 2032.
