Education minister to appoint private university chancellors

The draft legislation on education, currently in the lower house of the Belarus parliament, proposes that chancellors of the private universities in Belarus be appointed by the minister of education.

There is a total of 12 private higher educational institutions, which are run by owner-hired chancellors.

According to Uladzimir Zdanovic, who chairs the House of Representatives’ Education Committee, the blame for this provision should be put on the chancellors themselves, as they allegedly “compromised the system of the private higher education.”

However, the government has no plans to abolish private universities, Zdanovic said.
